There’s nothing better than an unsuspecting car running a 10-second quarter mile and watching everyones reaction to it. YouTube user BigKleib34 brings us another great video for us to share with you guys, and this ’89 Jeep Comanche is pretty legit.
The owner of this beast, David Pearson, purchased the Comanche from a guy on Craigslist for $500. He bought the car with the original Jeep 4.0 liter inline-six engine, and after some light maintenance, Pearson drove the car around for a few months as a daily driver before deciding to perform the LS engine swap. Pearson comments on why he performed the swap right away, stating that the car was just too slow, and he needed something faster.
Pearson’s LS engine of choice to swap was the always popular 5.3 liter V8, and what’s pretty impressive is that it’s only mildly modified. The engine uses a LS9 camshaft from a ZL1 Corvette, beefier valve springs for the new cam, and garage-built port and polished cylinder heads. Other than that, the bottom-end of the block is completely stock.
When Pearson swapped the 5.3 liter V8 into the Comanche, the car was a lot faster, but not fast enough. That’s when he decided to bolt-on a 76mm turbocharger to it, which he comments is making 18 pounds of boost, and is around 500 to 550 rear-wheel horsepower.
The 5.3 liter LS V8 seems to be gaining popularity for its budget price.
It seems like there may be a trend starting here for using Jeeps as drag cars, as seen here in another one of BigKleib34‘s videos. If you catch the video at 0:58 in, you’ll see the 10.90 second pass at 121.57 mph.
