The Gentlemen over at Hennessey Performance recently got their hot little hands on Chevrolet’s newest rear-wheel-drive sedan, the SS, and immediately started throwing more power at it. Packing an LS3 under the hood, the Chevy SS is already proving to be a strong contender in the full-size sedan segment.
When watching the speed climb on the Racelogic VBOX set up in the SS, we notice that the car gets up to 163 MPH at a more than steady pace, then sputters a little bit and goes right back up to 163.
Unfortunately, the way that Chevy has the transmission engineered allows the car to reach top speed only in fifth gear, when there are a total of six gears. This raises the question as to why the car has a 6-speed, but really, it’s self-explanatory; fuel economy.
If you’re planning on purchasing an SS in the near (or distant) future and know you’re going to want more power, Hennessey has kits ranging from 475 HP to 1000 HP.
The HPE600/650 kits include the supercharger upgrade, while the HPE800/1000 kits get the twin turbo upgrade. For a full-size sedan, the SS appears to be pretty quick even in stock form, but with the HPE600, it turns the car into a sleeper family hauler.
