We all know that the ZL1 is set to be the most powerful production Camaro ever released by Chevrolet. What we didn’t know, however, was just how the 2012 ZL1 was going to stack up against other sports cars on the Nurburgring test track. That was until Wednesday. According to Camaro 5, GM North American President Mark Reuss confirmed ZL1 track times that are not only impressive, but also within supercar territory.
Reuss addressed members of the media at a conference in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, giving the announcement we were waiting for. The ZL1 completed an official test lap on the 14.173-mile track in just 7 minutes and 41.27 seconds. Reuss made this statement with personal experience as he was one of the drivers that took to the German track behind the wheel of the ZL1 for testing. In addition to the announcement, the car that made the amazing track time was also on display at the conference.
While over 7 minutes for 14 miles may sound like a long time, on the enormous Nordschliefe track loop, it is actually in the territory of many supercars. On the list of track times at Nurburgring, the ZL1’s time sits as the 41st fastest. This puts it above cars like the Lamborghini Murcielago LP SuperVeloce, Corvette Z06, Pagani Zonda C12 S, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the Audi R8 V10. The ZL1’s time also puts it within 3 seconds of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera and McLaren Mercedes SLR.
The official track results for the ZL1 are almost hard to believe. While we knew the car was going to be powerful, it looks like we may have underestimated just how powerful and performance-oriented it was going to be. This makes the wait for the ZL1’s release even more difficult.
