At the 2015 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, we talked to the folks at Spec Clutches and Flywheels. With some new products on the cusp, David Norton gave us the inside scoop on its newest line of clutch kits.
The company showcased its newly developed triple-carbon kits that include such benefits as added heat control and high-torque capacity under stress. Designed for big power applications, the triple-carbon clutch kit is specifically made for Lamborghini Gallardos, 2JZ Toyota Supras, RB26 Nissan Skylines, Ford EcoBoost Mustangs, and other high-performance applications.
The new clutch kit from Spec is comprehensive and intricate when carefully dissected.
“We manufacture our clutches for different driving environments, and our products are designed to be direct bolt-ins,” said David Norton of Spec Clutches. “We are introducing our special EcoBoost Mustang clutch units, which are billet and support up to 671 lb-ft of torque on a street unit and almost 800 lb-ft on a track unit.”
For Japanese cars, Spec introduced clutch kits for the Hyundai Genesis 3.8-liter coupes for 2012 and newer. “We developed our street packages with stronger clutches and better durability,” Norton said. He also mentioned Spec’s prototype facility that develops and tests products in-house accordingly, and where they don’t have to rely on opinion or specific levels of understanding regarding a specific product they are manufacturing.
Each product is built for lasting strength and durability, no matter the driving situation,
“We replaced the stock ratcheting pressure plate, which is very restrictive for performance,” said Norton. “The triple-carbon material we use has unparalleled heat control and high torque capacity. It also has a very controlled engagement, which makes it easier on the driveline in today’s cars. We’ve created several lightweight options to cater to the inertia of a given build.”
