South Korean automaker Kia has come a long way since the days of making bicycle parts and steel. The company that gave us the Soul, one of the most popular cars in America, as well as the ambitious luxury newcomer K900, continues to edge its way into the stateside market with careful but well-designed vehicles.
We Americans, however, are nothing if not in love with V8s. We take it as a challenge to, when faced with an automobile that runs on anything under four liters of displacement, see how it would be possible to drop in an LS, fuel economy and conventional wisdom be damned.
That’s likely the sort of thinking that went through the mind of Craig Gibson, an Ohioan who went all-out to turn his Sorento into a sleeper that would slaughter any Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger foolish enough to step up. The noticeable scuffs and scratches notwithstanding, the SUV looks like any other you’d expect to run into in the parking lot at Target.
But it’s what is under the hood that counts. There, we see a 6.0L LY6 mill, sourced from a 2009 Silverado, paired with an LS3 manifold, 90mm throttle body, F-body exhaust manifolds, and custom PCM for “around 400 horses,” says Gibson. The project is far from over, however, as issues (such as the oil pan, wiring harness, and steering box that blocks the pathway of the exhaust manifold) will require time and money to address.
Nevertheless, we’re all rooting for Gibson to turn this innocent family schlepper into a street machine that chews up the competition at every stoplight. Follow the build by subscribing to the man’s channel on YouTube.
